Sorry I just re-read your email and apologize that I did not say 'I miss you so much' but instead I invented 'Dear D., Bon Voyage. Always.' I thought that is special for her new job prospect and it is kinda philosophical as life comprises different voyages...
 
I bought in a French flowerist (Au Nom De La Rose- in the name of rose) famous for its idyllic style. The bouquet was from long stem roses but was cut short to make it more 'Eurpoean style'. I agreed to that design as I did see the similar arrangement in TS where I worked. Some lady patient sent me one and it is very similar. Instead of all red, I chose different colors to make it more lively and jovial but not only 'romantic'. It should be a happy occasion. She certainly embarks on a greater journey and with more free time (It is really Karma. I went to Luwan to see the new OB/GYN center with team and they told me that Diana is leaving yesterday. So I talked to her in person for a while about her new job.) she will be able to be more focused on the study for a further degree. Hey! She told me that you call her very often. I am so jealous! hahahha but I know you have you way of doing things considering a lot of factors... And I bet that you 'miss me very much' as well.  'The time I miss you is the time when you think of me'.
 
Attached the photos I took so you can see if I have good taste. I went to Luwan myself (delivery man is more 'surprise' but i am afraid he will not take care of teh flowers I well chose) after buying the flower. I pretended to not know anything and I told D. that Dr. L. just asked me to deliver. Actually before she opened the card, I did not mention your name. She was saying as she unfolded the card : 'It is Dr. L, Bu Hui Ba!! (So happy!)' and I took a photos of her with many colleagues casting envious lights...hahhahahha....

Hi Uncle Sam,
 
I showed Ben and Pil this morning around TS as well as Luwan clinic. Answered some of the questions they asked and introdcued them to some of the doctors (Dr. K, Dr. L.) Also I showed them around Luwan Hospital. They are impressed by the difference in the way primary care is given.
Judy /Ms. Wong was so kind to invite me for lunch (and dinner, which I do not think I should go) together. I recommended Ding Tai Fung since they would like to try typical Shanghai cuisine and since I can feel the warmth when I walked in that in the Xintiandi again. I told them that we had a farewell lunch here and you like the specialty dumpling (xiao long bao) best. Wong's family is a very loving and caring one and they are full of gratitude for the small arrangement I made for them. Tomorrow night (Friday), I might meet Ben and Phi (brothers) for a 'young people's evening outing' as suggested by Ms. Wong. I will call Hen to see if he is available for the gathering.
We also took a picture together as they are really friendly and warm people and I felt very happy that you gave me the opportunity to know your friends.

中国四川5.12 大地震之中，可歌可泣的人和事不计其数。震后重建家园时，一定要广征海内外最好的艺术家，设计出最佳的碑亭塑像，让那些地裂山崩关头无与伦比的人物和事件“凝固”起来，作为中华民族精神的宝贵体现，留给后代，永垂不朽。 这个建议，相信人人皆会赞同。 此时，我要建议震后的四川，还须建造另一座特殊的纪念碑——用那些倒塌的学校建筑物的残骸，建一座碑，可以考虑命其名为“永不”碑。 截止5月17日早晨8时媒体的报道，震区已经有统计的倒塌教室高达6900间，这还不包括震中最惨重地方的学校，因为目前尚无法计算。在这近七千间教室的废墟之下，埋压着几千个中小学生的肉体，以及随着这些柔嫩的肉体一起被毁灭了的孩子们对明天的梦想，以及随着这些孩子一起被毁灭了的爸爸妈妈、爷爷奶奶、外公外婆对他们未来的期待。 我们能够忘记这一切吗？天理、人伦、法律的哪一条允许我们忘记这一切？ 大批教室的倒塌，原因是多重的：农村和偏远城镇的贫困，使能够用于学校建筑的拨款太有限；小地方的技术水平较低，建造抗震房屋的力量可能不足；国家明文颁布的建筑条例，到了基层往往就成了一纸空文，工程验收徒有虚名；那一点有限的学校基建资金，经过一些腐败的负责人和偷工减料的承包商的克扣，又大大缩了水，等等。所有这些原因造就的大批“豆腐渣”工程，一到关键时刻，就变成了杀人恶魔。 以上这些原因，可以用三个范畴概括：贫困、失职、腐败。第一项需要通过公共政策的调整来补救，后两项必须经过法律来追究惩处。几千个孩子的生命，如果不能换来监督制度和公共政策方面显著的、实质性的进步，那我们还要付出什么样的更高“学费”？ 中国两家大媒体的记者在报道四川地震的时候，用了一句话，令人永生难忘：在许多村镇里，学校房子倒塌压死了那么多孩子，意味着这里丧失了差不多整整的一代人！ 任我们流多少泪，也冲洗不走丧失了孩子——许多是独生子女——的父母们的伤痛。 5月16日，在回答《中国日报》等记者提出的中小学房屋倒塌比其他建筑更严重的问题时，中国住房和城建部部长姜伟新表示：“豆腐渣”工程在任何时候都是不被允许的，如果最后调查出来有偷工减料等问题，一定要严肃查处。 公众期待着你们严肃查处的透明过程和正义结果。 我建议四川在灾后建造一座名为“永不”的纪念碑，其含义有二：永不忘记已经发生的这些悲剧；永不让这样的悲剧以后再发生。 四川会不会用那些倒塌的学校建筑的残骸建这样一座警诫碑呢？让我们来看一个有意义的先例。 第二次世界大战后德国人在西柏林建了一座特别的纪念碑。在战争的最后阶段，盟军把柏林城轰炸得体无完肤，一座著名的古教堂被炸燃烧得只剩下半壁残墙，摇摇欲坠。战后重建时，一部分人的意见是清除它，因为它立在市中心，既难看又危险。另一部分人的意见是设法保留它，以警示以后的德国人不要再发动战争，以免自己的家园焚于战火。 后者的意见被明智的政府采纳。于是建筑设计师紧挨着古教堂的半壁残墙，建起半壁玻璃钢的现代主义建筑。这样一来，旧半壁就有了依托保护，不会倒塌。新旧一体，仍用作教堂。明丽的新一半直耸云天，展示着欣欣向上的生气。在它的衬托下，那被炸烧焦的旧一半显得格外凄凉死寂。两相对比，把战争的可憎与和平的可爱这一主题，发挥得淋漓尽致！如此匠心独具，使该幢建筑在遍布欧洲的千百座二次大战纪念物中，鹤立鸡群，名震遐迩。1990年春，我们开车横贯中欧八国考察，驶入西柏林时，正值晨曦冲破蓝天。我立在这座反战纪念物前，对它透露出来的民族反思的道德勇气和化残壁为奇景的神工鬼斧，真是叹为观止！ 世人都赞赏德国对第二次世界大战的深刻反省和战后复兴的宏业，若无直面正视自己过去所作所为的坦诚心胸，哪来的深刻反省？历史之所以对未来有意义，就在于它保留了前人和我辈的善行和劣迹。若删去劣迹，只留下业绩，历史就成了粉饰。它对后代，只有误导作用，没有教育价值。 个人的进步、群体的繁荣、民族的复兴，全都要从正视自己的真实过去开始。惟有智慧的强者，才敢看着自己的丑陋处不蒙眼、不托辞。 我引这个例子，并非是说发动侵略战争与建造“豆腐渣工程”是百分之百一样的行为；当然不是。我强调的是：震后重建家园时，四川要给震灾中涌现的感人不朽的“善”行立碑，也要给震灾中暴露的不可饶恕的“丑”行立碑。 为夺去了几千个孩子生命的“丑”立碑，在我看来，是爱国主义价值观的体现：你若真爱这个国家，你不能不爱它的国民，不能不爱这个民族的未来——孩子们。 四川同胞们，如果我不建议你们建这座碑，我对不起你们。如果你们不建这座碑，你们对不起自己。 注：本文仅代表作者本人观点。

This is especially meaningful for today after the earthquake in Si Chuan...I am praying for my compatriots and I admire the nurses and doctors working on the front line...As we celebrated International Nurse Day, China Si Chuan province saw 7.8 magnitute earthquake claiming a few thoudand lives as per last update. The number is climbing as more bodies will be dug out from the site. The worst earthquake in the history took place in 70s in Tangshan and this time it is the same magnitute in a province with about 100 thousand population.Diaster seems follow one another.
My friend Joe called from overseas to check if I am ok as he is watching TV about the earthquake.I told him that at these times, I always feel we Shanghainese people are way luckier than our compats in every sense. We enjoy a prime geological location; we are the powerhouse of chinese economy, and we seldom have any devastating diasters(touch wood). Just like Singapore who was standing still while the rest of the South Asia was heavily afflicted by tsunami back in 2005.
China has experienced the big diastrous snow in the 2008 beginning and now it is facing the big tast of earthquake relief merely 80 over days prior to the grand Olymplic opening day...

Hopefully we will be fine...

Dear Nurses and Colleagues of ParkwayHealth in China,

 

On behalf of ParkwayHealth, please allow me to wish all of you a Happy Nurses' Day!  As I am sure many of you know, International Nurses' Day is celebrated every May 12th, on Florence Nightingale's birthday.

There are more than 11 million nurses in the world today, which is an indication of the importance of this ancient and honorable profession.  In addition to their contributions at all hospitals and clinics, nurses are also the main medical service providers at disaster reliefs, refugee camps, and even during wars.  They are present at the start of life, by healthy birth, and they also present at the end of life, at peaceful death.  In many countries, and hopefully soon in China, the role of nurses continues to grow ever larger, for example in the US with “Nurse Practitioners”, who help take the place of doctors for simple illnesses.  Driven by the goals of nursing: to promote health, prevent illness, restore health, and alleviate suffering, nurses all over the world help improve the life of billions of people by providing the caring touch that is essential for healing

On this special day, I would like to thank all of our nurses, for their hard work, and for their commitment and dedication to our patients, and look forward to our celebratory dinner next weekend.

目前全球有超过一千一百万名护士。这标志这这一古老而崇高的事业是如此的重要。 除了在医院和诊所工作之外，护士也在灾难救助，难民营甚至战地提供主要的医疗服务。他们通过助产迎接生命的开始，他们通过临终关          怀送别人生的终点。在许多国家，在中国希望也很快出现，护士发挥的作用日渐增大和重要，例如，在美国的护理实践者可以帮助替代医生处理简单疾患。全球的护理工作者在：促进保健，预防疾   病，恢复健康，驱除疾患的四大宗旨指引下，正在不断的通过提供人性化的关怀，提高亿万人的生活质量。

 

在这个特殊的日子里，我想衷心地感谢我们所有的护理人员，感谢你们的辛勤工作以及对患者的认真负责和奉献精神。 预祝你们下周末的庆祝晚餐快乐。
